Netflix just confirmed the third and final season will be released this March - and if the newly-dropped trailer is anything to go by, it's set to be steamy

It's coming. In 2024 – 11th March to be exact – we will return to the walls of the fictional boarding school Hillerska to pick up where we left off in the heart-racing, swoon-worthy world of Young Royals. The first five episodes will premier globally on Netflix on the 11th, to be followed by the sixth and final episode on 18th March.

The Swedish series' diehard fans will be pleased to know the core cast and Vogue Scandinavia digital cover stars, Omar Rudberg, Edvin Ryding, Malte Gårdinger, Frida Argento and Nikita Uggla are all making a return for the third season. But what can we expect this time around?

After another rocky season of Prince Wilhelm's and Simon's endless will-they-won't-they dynamic, season two closed with a reconciliation and a public declaration of love that had viewers begging for more. Judging from the teaser clip shared by Netflix this week, there will be no shortage of chemistry between the two – with the short video capturing a charged interaction full of coy looks and flirtatious words.

The series' sensitive exploration of queer themes will surely continue throughout season three, with Wilhelm inevitably facing the consequences – and potential public fall-out – from his royal LGPTQ+ love confession.

In a recent interview with Vogue, Rudberg remained tight-lipped on the details of the upcoming season, but did advise fans to "bring tissues", only divulging that the final season is "going to be very shocking, very dramatic."

The ending has been clear to me from the start and I’m so thankful and honoured to get to finish this tale as intended.

Little else has been released from Netflix at this stage round the plot of the forthcoming season, but the question marks around the fate of the lovers, affectionately referred to as 'Wilmon' by fans, will be enough binge-fodder for most.

When Young Royal was renewed for its third season, head writer and co-creator Lisa Ambjörn stated, "I’ve always imagined Young Royals being told in three parts and because of the fans’ dedication to our story, we get to tell the last one. The ending has been clear to me from the start and I’m so thankful and honoured to get to finish this tale as intended.”

Filming of the third season wrapped in June 2023, with Ryding revealing in a video shared by Netflix that his favourite scene to film was the finals scene, while Rudberg divulged – without giving too much away – that the highlight for him was a scene that required them to shoot in the woods all night. Rudberg also took to Twitter to tell followers the last day of shooting was, unsurprisingly, an "emotional day". "I'm so happy and proud, I can't wait for you guys to see the end of this story. This is THE season," he posted.

At this stage, there is no fixed release date for the third instalment of Young Royals, but an early 2024 drop is likely, with fans speculating it could be in the first quarter of the year.
