What a Halloweekend it was. This year’s hair-raising style proved that Scandinavian celebrities don’t do spooky subtly. Discover the standout looks that Vogue Scandinavia’s editors spied below
It goes without saying that celebrities feverishly seize the opportunity to shapeshift each Halloween. Some take it to the next level – undergoing radical, oftentimes unrecognisable transformations (cough* Heidi Klum), while others opt to get glammed to the gods for the occasion, taking full avail of the opportune excuse to channel their pop culture heroes. Featuring ensembles that range from fiendish, flirty or downright freaky, below the team at Vogue Scandinavia dub their Hallowqueens (and kings!) from our region who reigned the weekend.
SNL stars as ABBA
Trust Sabrina Carpenter to breathe life back into one of beloved Swedish band, ABBA's most iconic looks. The singer (and devoted ABBA fan) stepped out with SNL comedian Veronika Slowikowska last Saturday night wearing nostalgic-inducing recreations of Owe Sandström's (the man behind the making of ABBA's sensational stage costumes) iconic cat minis. Originally worn by Agnetha and Anni-Frid, we think that Sabrina's take did the originals justice. However, the American sweetheart's Halloween fits didn't stop there — look no further than her Madison Square Garden looks (Barbie, Wonder Woman, and Fred Flintstone to name a few) for a wealth of inspiration from someone who, in our humble view, espresso-ed herself and raised the style stakes high this Halloween.
Praya Lundberg as Chun Li
Amidst the mass of video game and anime-inspired outfits we noticed this year, it was Praya Lundberg’s that caught our eye. The Swedish-Thai The White Lotus actor stole the show as fictional Chinese martial artist Chun Li. Captured in a series of action movie-worthy power poses (perhaps to the sound of Nicki Minaj’s punchy tune of the same name), Lundberg’s efforts have compelled us to reach for our gaming consoles and spring into action.

Maya Jama as a swashbuckling pirate
In what was, according to her Instagram caption, her ‘first Manchester Halloween,’ British (and part Swedish) TV presenter, Maya Jama reached for a cinched chestnut-coloured corset and an angular suede tricorn to sail up to the party as a sea-faring pirate princess. With her footballer boyfriend, Rúben Dias at her side as her trusty Jack Sparrow, Jama was, without doubt, the belle of the British city’s frightful festivities. Though her costume is far from conceptual, she proved that the popularity of pirate apparel isn’t waning – it's an oldie but a goldie.

Liva B. Ingebrigtsen as a washed-up octopus
Liva B. Ingebrigtsen’s take on cephalopod costuming quickly began to occto-py our Halloween mood boards after its debut at Alexandra Joner's Oslo bash. Looking remarkably akin to the real creature, the Norwegian TV personality looked as if she had been fished right out of the ocean and deposited upon the dance floor of the highly anticipated annual Halloween party.Ink-credible effort.

Elsa Hosk as Tina Carlyle
It’s almost impossible to match the mesmerising chemistry and effortless seduction Cameron Diaz exuded on screen as Tina Carlyle in The Mask (1994). Yet, this Halloween, Swedish supermodel and former Vogue Scandinavia cover star, Elsa Hosk did just that. Referencing a standout scene from one of her ‘favourite movies growing up,’ she wore a show-stopping vermillion gown that looked strikingly similar to the original Michael Kaplan design. Right down to the matching red mani and the gold gilded doors – Hosk’s execution was faultless and characteristically glamorous. Bravo.

Vanity Vain as Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga has had too many haunting and perfectly reference-able fashion moments to count, not least her recent cameo in Netflix’s Wednesday or her latest celebratory ‘The Mayhem Ball’ tour, which stopped in Stockholm this October. Swedish drag performer and RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars alum, Vanity Vain, leaned into their profound love of everything Gaga by replicating the star’s 'Born This Way’ music video look. From the gaunt skeleton makeup and monochromatic suiting, to a flowing mane of candy floss locks, we think Vain nailed the brief.

Emilia Silberg as Mia Wallace
Uma Thurman’s enigmatic and razor-sharp portrayal of subversive mob wife Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction (1994) is a hallowed moment in Hollywood history. Unfailingly, Mia Wallace is also one of the most ubiquitous characters encountered each Halloween. The winning combination of her blunt bob, cropped cigarette pants and crisp white shirt evokes just as much cinematic, sartorial magic now as it did when the iconic motion picture first released – with its beauty and popular appeal lying in its sheer simplicity. We think influencer, Emilia Silberg delivered one of the most polished reinterpretations of Wallace’s wardrobe – and insouciance – in recent memory.
Mondo Duplatis and Desiré Inglander as Danny and Sandy
It's been a whirlwind year for the champion Swedish pole vaulter, Mondo Duplatis and his influencer bride to be, Desiré Inglander. If anyone wasn't yet convinced that they're hopelessly devoted to each other, the couple opted to continue their tradition of coordinating costumes as the lovestruck Sandy and Danny from Grease (1978).
