Did you know that Maya Jama is part Swedish? In honour of her photo in the centre of two Skarsgårds, we break down the beloved host and presenter's Swedish heritage

Earlier this week a very important image hit the Internet: Maya Jama in a Skarsgård sandwich. But this indelible image of Jama between actors Bill and Alexander Skarsgård isn’t only notable due to its pleasing aesthetics; it also serves as a delightful reminder of Jama’s Swedish roots. While Jama is most closely associated with the UK, the Love Island host and former British Vogue cover star has Swedish roots – her mother, Sadie, is Scottish and Swedish.

Jama’s love of Sweden runs deep. On an appearance on the Jonathan Ross show, the presenter revealed that she once spoke fluent Swedish, but upon moving to Bristol her mum, who raised Jama largely on her own, stopped speaking her mother tongue. Over the years, Jama lost her fluency but can still pick up bits and pieces of Swedish conversation. She describes this further in a Tweet from 2017, stating: 'I used to live in Sweden, my brother was born there & I went to nursery there An could speak it as a child, not gna lie I've forgotten most'.

But the most Swedish thing about Jama? Her love of Kalles Caviar or, as she referred to it on her Jonathan Ross appearance, “not the posh caviar, caviar in a paste”. Her other favourite Swedish cuisine? Kanelbullar, of course.

As for whether Jama and the Skarsgårds chatted in Swedish? In our minds, yes.
