Marimekko - AW22

By Josefin Forsberg

Made to last, Marimekko's signature styles are zhuzhed up for autumn/winter 2022 in swirling prints of blush and okra

Not only did Marimekko host a digital presentation to show the brand’s autumn/winter 2022 collection during Copenhagen Fashion Week. The Finnish design house also opened a joint exhibition with Danish visual artist Trine Søndergaard whose work has inspired the new season.

“Throughout 2022, our collections’ overarching theme has been New Folk, and each collection has, in its own way, explored the similarities between folk wear around the globe,” creative director Rebekka Bay says about the collection. Trine Søndergaard’s ‘Strude’ series was the main inspiration for the coming year’s overarching theme. Bay points to the artist’s universal appeal, speaking to women across generations as something Marimekko strives for as well. “Our dresses are designed to be passed down from one generation to the next,” Bay adds.

Quintessentially Marimekko, the A-line silhouettes and attention to the details – from a well-placed zipper to waist cinched just so – speaks to the Finnish brand’s strong heritage. As usual, colourful prints in swirling shapes and repetitive patterns are put on display in a colour mix of okra, blush, black, white, and beige. A standout piece in the collection was the bright orange floral puffer coat, a new take on a category that has become increasingly popular for the brand.
