Vogue Scandinavia's go-to rug brand, Layered, has expanded its offering with the Cord Collection, a lineup of handwoven wool rugs created in collaboration with Swedish furniture producer Massproductions. Below, we take a closer look at the tactile, craftsmanship-driven collection

Swedish interior brand Layered has a knack for creating buzzy collaborations, from partnering with renowned colourist Evelina Severin to joining forces with multi-disciplinary artist Evelina Kroon. Now, the company has unveiled its latest team-up, uniting with Stockholm-based furniture producer Massproductions on a collection of handcrafted rugs.

The line-up, entitled the Cord Collection, hones in on the very essence of rugmaking. Comprising four handwoven wool rugs arriving in grounding, earthy tones, the collection explores the core principles of weaving, where industrial rigour meets handcrafted texture.

At a first glance, you’ll notice a stripe pattern running through the rugs. Yet it isn’t merely a pattern, but a structure intricately woven into the designs. Founders of Massproductions, Magnus Elebäck and Chris Martin, have channelled their three-dimensional design expertise into contrasting textures that emerge as stripes visually and through touch. By harnessing a slightly coarser yarn for the stripes, a subtle tactile juxtaposition and added depth and dimension are achieved.

“Weaving and stripes have always been closely connected, but we wanted to explore the stripe as a fundamental element rather than just a pattern. By integrating it into the warp, we collaborate with the production methods themselves,” Elebäck explains. “At the same time, we chose to leave space for the irregularities of the craft; variations in tension and material are not flaws, but natural qualities, human traces that give the design its character.”

The collection’s calming, neutral palette makes the rugs versatile across a range of interiors, from a seaside summerhouse to an inner-city apartment. Two colourways, however, reveal a gentle pop of colour, with crisp yellow and cobalt blue stripes slicing across rustic brown and beige tones. “We wanted to create a dialogue between the natural and the constructed,” says Martin. “By contrasting a base of wool in subdued, neutral shades with a bold, artificial accent colour, we found a balance between the organic and the contemporary.”

Malin Glemme, the founder of Layered, notes that it’s been “fascinating to see how Massproductions applies its precision to our handcrafted textures.” “In the Cord Collection, industrial design principles meet living craftsmanship. We have created a collection that feels rational yet warm, where each rug serves as a foundation that defines the space,” she says.
