The Swedish interior brand has unveiled its second collection with celebrated colourist Evelina Severin, or Teklan, featuring eye-catching, handcrafted wool rugs in entrancing patterns and sharp colour play

Remember the delicious-hued, graphic colour-block rugs that the Swedish interior brand Layered introduced last year in collaboration with acclaimed Swedish colourist Evelina Severin, better known as Teklan? Now, the dynamic duo is back with another team-up, building on the first collection. The result is a sleek, six-piece rug line-up rendered in eye-catching hues and entrancing, geometric patterns inspired by everything from classical architecture to the intricate rhythm of tiled surfaces.

“Teklan has a rare ability to use colour as a tool to deepen and elevate pattern. She sees the rug as a canvas and keeps pushing the boundaries of what a rug can be – with a clarity and precision that never fails to surprise,” muses Malin Glemme, founder and creative director at Layered. “We’re proud to continue this collaboration, which moves fluidly between the unexpected and the self-evident.”

Comprising three core patterns – ‘Diagonal’, ‘Labyrinth’, and ‘Fregio’ – each rug is handcrafted from 100 per cent wool and is available in two rich colourways. Take, for instance, the hypnotic ‘Labyrinth’, which draws from Teklan’s spatial installations, where surfaces are often laid out in sequences and transitions. The striking design also subtly references Carlo Scarpa’s architecture, particularly his brutalist San Vito d’Altivole monument, ‘La Tomba Brion’. The nested rectangular motif, with its hues that alternate between blush pink, burgundy and ochre – as seen in the ‘Coral Pink’ colourway – creates a rhythmic, optical illusion evoking a corridor-like feel, perfect for infusing a room with depth and character.

“I like when design is rooted in a system but allows room for personal expression. Working with rugs is like sketching a new geography for a room – you influence how people move, how they perceive scale and surfaces,” reflects Teklan. “I like the idea that a rug can either enhance a space or create a deliberate break within it.”

Another standout from the collection is the ‘Diagonal’, which, true to its name, features angled, candy wrapper-esque stripes that cut across the rug. The stripe is a recurring motif in Teklan’s visual language, and here, it’s reinterpreted from a fresh perspective, introducing slight contour through colour shifts. In the ‘Sky’ colourway, for example, two shades of burgundy deliver a punchy contrast against a sky-blue backdrop. “I like to move between extremes. Something can be stylised yet soft, systematic yet organic,” Teklan continues. “It often comes down to exploring what happens in the encounter between the flat and the spatial – how a pattern can make a floor feel deeper, or a room feel larger.”
