From eye-catching accents to investment-worthy pieces, discover our October edit below
Hear me out: October might just be the cosiest month of the year (sorry, December). I’m not so much a Halloween person – though I do enjoy the occasional binge marathon of cult horror flicks – so for me, this time of year is less spooky season, more sweater-weather Gilmore Girls. It’s the crisp autumn days that allow for artful layering in lieu of the bulky puffer jackets and heavy winter coats lurking in my closet. The vibrant leaves that still cling to the trees, inviting long strolls amidst a sea of reds, yellows and oranges. The gradually darkening evenings (not yet pitch-black by 4PM like in November!) that call for cocooning myself with a plush blanket, toasty cup of tea in hand.
With this in mind, I’ve rounded up the standout Nordic interior design arrivals from October that earned the ‘add to cart’. Think sweet mugs to house said tea, lamps that cast the softest ambient glow, silky bedding rivalling a five-star check-in, and scented candles to transform your space into a sanctuary…
Danish brand Arki Studio has unveiled a new modular shelving solution dubbed ‘Simple Shelf’, designed by Thomas Tulinius and Anders Lind and handcrafted from oak veneer. With a minimalist design (as its name suggests), the lightweight and understated piece is available as a square module with six compartments, and can be used on its own or expanded with other ‘Simple Shelves’.
Why we love it: Who wouldn’t love modular furniture? But not only is the ‘Simple Shelf’ practical, it also delights with its streamlined, refined design. This shelf can be used as both freestanding or as a room divider, built up vertically or expanded horizontally, and its generous shelves are perfect for displaying your favourite books and objets d’art.
Created by designer Philip Bro for Danish company Le Klint, the brand’s latest lamp collection, ‘Softly Pleated’, features delicately hand-folded felt lamps crafted to fill the room with a gentle glow while also effectively illuminating downward. The sculptural design draws from Le Klint’s signature hand-folded cross-pleats but amplifies the scale and is available in a range of sizes.
Why we love it: This lamp is perfect for crowning a living or dining space, with its dreamy, artful silhouette that immediately draws the eye. The felt material lends it a cloud-like softness, while we also appreciate that the pendant does both – casting a warm, atmospheric radiance alongside functional, directional light.
The Finnish glass giant Iittala has joined forces with the buzzy, go-to café of many Parisians, Café Kitsuné. The result is a limited-edition collection of Iittala’s iconic ‘Teema’ mugs, designed by Kaj Franck in 1952. Swathed in delicious swirling patterns recalling the latte art of Café Kitsuné’s comforting hot blends like coffee and matcha, the porcelain mugs are available in four different colourways: ‘Matcha’, ‘Sakura’, ‘Cappuccino’ and ‘Sesame’.
Why we love it: The cup you enjoy (or inhale) your morning coffee or tea from matters, and we adore the whirling shapes that dance across the celebrated ‘Teema’ mugs in this collab – transporting you, if only for a fleeting moment, to a quaint Parisian café.
Rejoice, the holiday collections have finally begun to arrive! Danish company Ferm Living has joined in, unveiling its range of festive homewares and decorations. The extensive collection boasts everything from candles, baubles and ornaments to Christmas stockings, tea towels and napkin rings, all rendered in the brand’s signature, earthy hues.
Why we love it: Christmas decorations always run a risk of veering into tacky, but there’s not a whiff of gaudiness in sight here. Organic forms meet a muted colour palette, with the line-up’s dark reds and greens evoking that cheerful Yuletide spirit. Our favourites? The nature-inspired baubles which are a chic addition to any Christmas tree.
Swedish brand Aarke is known for its cutting-edge coffee makers, and now, it has added a sleek Coffee Press to its offering. Crafted from stainless steel, the piece has been designed with durability in mind, featuring a precision mesh filter – also made from stainless steel – and a cool-touch finish. Meanwhile, its double-walled, vacuum-insulated body locks in heat long after brewing, keeping your coffee fresh and hot for up to three hours.
Why we love it: Mastering the perfect cup of coffee is almost an art form, but Aarke’s Coffee Press, with its stainless steel filter (no paper filters needed) and easy-to-clean, dishwasher-safe design, makes pursuing that blissful brew effortless. Bonus points for the polished look.
Iconic Danish design house Georg Jensen has ventured into the world of home fragrance, releasing a collection of scented candles. These, however, aren’t your typical, spice- or flower-infused olfactory blends. Drawing inspiration from the brand’s centuries-long silversmithing heritage, the candles channel three of Georg Jensen’s signature materials – silver, steel and quartz – into truly unique scent experiences. Take, for instance, the ‘Kvarts’, a rich fusion of pepper and white jasmine achieving a mineral, salty and crystalline aroma that mingles with hints of oakmoss and musk.
Why we love it: It’s always intriguing when brands release scented candles with more unexpected notes, and Georg Jensen’s new launches bring something both surprising and sublime to our cosy evenings at home. The architectural candles – like the rest of the company’s offering – also double as petite statement pieces, perfect for placing on coffee tables or nightstands.
With over a decade of successful collaboration under their belts, Kvadrat and Raf Simons are no new bedfellows. Now, the powerhouse duo have teamed up on a joyful kids collection, comprising a slew of playful pieces including teddy bears, plush towels, velvet cushions and soft jacquard blankets, that embody Simons’ sharp eye for design while harnessing Kvadrat’s pioneering textiles.
Why we love it: Name a more stylish kids’ interiors collection – I’ll wait. Sophisticated in its design, yet bursting with bright colours and subtle animal motifs, the line-up injects the fun you’d expect from children’s pieces. Then there are the materials, oh-so-supple and high quality… As they say: teach them young.
When it was first released in 2023, Finnish brand Vaarnii’s wooden ‘001 Stool’, designed by Swedish Fredrik Paulsen, was swiftly snapped up by design aficionados worldwide. Initially available only in the golden hue of pine wood, Vaarnii has now introduced the architectural stool – and its matching ‘001 Dining Chair’ – in a striking, deep black stain.
Why we love it: Chunky furniture has been having a moment for a while now (hi Gustaf Westman!), and the ‘001 Stool’, with its sturdy, wide legs, cuts a captivating silhouette. The bold black finish makes the design stand out even more, while also accentuating the pine’s beautiful grain, rather than concealing it.
Danish studio Norm Architects first teased their upcoming rug collection during the latest edition of 3daysofdesign in June, and now the line-up has finally arrived. Drawing from the quiet strength of Japanese architecture, married with Nordic craft traditions, the offering features tactile, handmade rugs woven from natural materials by the skilled artisans of Linie Design. Composed in a grounded palette of browns and beiges, texture takes centre stage in these geometric creations, designed to lend rhythm and depth to the room.
Why we love it: Rugs don’t always need to feature loud patterns of vivid colours to make a room sing, and the ‘Woven Matter’ collection is a wonderful example of that. With its rich textures and subdued forms, this collection harmonises with various interiors, while also imbuing them with a sense of dynamism.
Nordic Knots, the sought-after Swedish rug and curtain brand, just released its first-ever homeware collection. Honing in on elevated home textiles, the line-up offers pieces crafted from “the finest range of fabrics”, materialising in a sleek selection spanning crisp percale bedding and luxurious cashmere throws in restrained, muted shades. “Every piece is refined down to the last detail, designed to elevate daily rituals into moments of clarity,” notes Liza Berglund Laserow, the co-founder and chief creative director of the brand.
Why we love it: On average, we spend most of our lives in bed (yes, really), which makes it entirely justifiable to invest in sumptuous sheets. Nordic Knots’ percale bedding harnesses silky, fresh 400-thread-count Egyptian cotton, and we’re equally smitten with the dusty blue colourway trimmed with contrasting red piping.
