What a feeling! We're in a 'Flashdance' fashion era, so this collab is box-stepping its way to the top of our shopping list

Ganni and Lululemon take their cues from Flashdance and Fame in a 22-piece collection of leg warmers, leopard leggings, and frilled jackets, launching 15 October

The 1980s was a golden decade for dance films. It gave us unforgettable moments (we still dream of dramatically dousing ourselves in water after a rigorous dance routine) and genre-defining one-liners ("Nobody puts Baby in a corner"), alongside a chorus line of surprisingly covetable leotards and sweat sets. The colour scheme was saccharine and the curls feathered.

It was the creative antithesis of corp-core yuppies, but in the wake of Bateman-approved pinstripes and extra-wide shoulders storming the runways, it seems it is time for Flashdance and Fame to step up to serve as sartorial inspiration for the zeitgeist. At least, if you set your sights on Ganni's new collaboration with Lululemon, launching this month.

Blending two brands can sometimes present a challenge, but the collection makes the most of Ganni's eclectic aesthetic core and Lululemon's performance-driven fabrics, while signature styles such as the Define Jacket are amped-up with Ganni frills. "'80s dance movies have been part of my life since I was a child, so they felt like such a natural starting point,” says Ditte Reffstrup, creative director at Ganni. “I’ve always been drawn to the energy, determination and sense of freedom in those films, and the way dance becomes such a powerful form of self-expression."

The 22-piece collection features styles across women’s, accessories, and footwear. Studio-friendly silhouettes dominate – be it leopard leggings or a classic off-the-shoulder sweatshirt – and accessories, including leg warmers, boleros, and headbands, bring a playful spirit of dance culture into everyday wear. "It all comes from movement. When we first started talking about the collection, Ditte said her movement practice was dance, and everything flowed from there,” says Jonathan Cheung, global creative director at Lululemon.

Accompanying the collection is a campaign video featuring actor Jennifer Beals and singer and dancer Mette. Paying homage to the era, the duo dance their way through a studio sporting the new collection, moving to music reminiscent of 'Maniac'.

"This project delightfully tied together so many threads from my life, noted Mette, pointing out how Lululemon has moved with her since dance school. Better yet, the Flashdance of it all came full circle for the dancer: “I grew up learning to weld from my dad, always looking toward the possibility of a big audition or a break into the arts someday."

The Ganni x Lululemon collection launches on 15 October and will be available online at lululemon.com and ganni.com, and in select retail stores. If you ask us, it is best to sashay your way to the store to secure your favourite pieces before they sell out.
