Edvin Ryding has officially entered The Hunger Games. The Swedish actor will star in Sunrise on the Reaping, and this is everything we know so far

Edvin Ryding is no stranger to a beloved cinematic universe. Earlier this summer he blessed our screens as Swedish soldier Erik in 28 Years Later, the third installation in Danny Boyle’s zombie franchise. He also has some experience starring in a project with a fervent fanbase; Young Royals stans continue to support Ryding, who played the dashing prince Wilhelm, over a year after the final season hit Netflix. All of which is to say that Ryding’s latest role is firmly in his bag. Friday it was announced that the actor will join the star-studded cast of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, a film that is part of a beloved cinematic universe, which also boasts an emphatic stan-base.

Ryding joins an all-star cast that includes noted Joachim Trier fan Elle Fanning, Kieren Culkin, Glenn Close and Ralph Fiennes (who also appeared in 28 Years Later). His casting was announced alongside that of Iris Apatow. According to Variety, Ryding and Apatow will play Proserpina and Vitus, “two Capitol University students assigned to the prep team for the District 12 Tributes”.

Based on the Suzanne Collins book of the same name, the events of Sunrise on the Reaping take place 24 years before those depicted in The Hunger Games. The story is set around the 50th Hunger Games, in which a young Haymitch Abernathy (portrayed by Woody Harrelson in his later years) competes. Australian actor Joseph Zada will star as a young Abernathy. Given that Abernathy hails from District 12, it stands to reason that Ryding and Apatow’s characters will be preparing him for competition.

With the film’s American release date set for November 20th, 2026, we will have to patiently wait to discover more about Ryding’s Hunger Games debut. However, given that there are no Swedish people in the Hunger Games universe (not yet, anyway), we can infer that this will mark Ryding’s first ever non-Swedish character – a major moment in this rising superstar’s career. May the odds be ever in his favour.
