Having snagged Matilda Djerf’s coveted new set of hair products, Vogue Scandinavia’s beauty editor Josefin Forsberg puts the ‘Breezy Styling Mist’ to the test. Here, we discover if this volume-promising product is really up to the task of recreating Djerf’s iconic ‘do

Matilda Djerf has the most envy-inducing hair on the internet. Flawlessly feathered and with an inconceivable amount of volume, her tresses have ended up on plenty a Pinterest board throughout the years. As such, it comes as little surprise that the Djerf Avenue founder finds herself launching a new beauty line focused on hair.

Releasing two products today – a volume spray called Breezy Styling Mist and a multi-use styling product called On-The-Go Styling Gel – Djerf sets out to help her ‘Angels’ recreate her signature 'dos: a bouncy blowout and the perfect slicked-back bun. But is it really as easy as it seems?

Below, beauty editor Josefin Forsberg gives us her tried and tested low-down on whether Djerf Avenue Beauty’s new ‘Breezy Styling Mist’ is the key to iconic volume.

What is the ‘Breezy Styling Mist’?

In Djerf’s own words, the Breezy Styling Mist is “the secret” to her bouncy blowout. A multi-use spray that adds volume, hold, and heat protection, it is a two-for-one which can also be used on dry hair as a refresher spray if “you need a little touch-up”. "One of my favourite ways to use the spray is as a finishing product if I feel like my hair looks tired," Djerf continues. "I just like to spray a little bit and then go in with a round brush and a hair dryer. It adds volume.”

According to the product description, the Breezy Styling Mist provides your hair with weightless volume and hold while helping to shape it during styling, all without leaving it greasy, crusty, or dry. It is made for all hair types, produced in Sweden and contains 89 per cent natural ingredients. Speaking of ingredients, the key components in creating the promised wonder volume are Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Panthenol, Hydrolyzed Linseed Extract, Sunflower Seed Extract, and Aloe Vera.

Our first impression

Naturally, I (alongside thousands of others on the perennial hunt for root-lifting hacks) was intrigued. A single product promising Djerf’s va-va-voom volume could arguably be the holy grail of hairstyling.

To give some context: I am absolutely not a hair stylist, but have tried my fair share of products throughout my career as a beauty editor. I have typically Scandinavian hair, fine but in abundance. While my hair holds a curl, creating volume at the roots takes hopes, prayers, blood, sweat and tears. And it usually falls flat after a minute or two. Following the recommended steps, I apply the spray evenly, section by section, from roots to ends on dry (or damp) hair before adding heat with the wand and round brush attachments of my Dyson Air Wrap – replicating Djerf’s own routine like an instruction manual.

The first thing that hits me is the soft floral scent. Reminiscent of freshly washed laundry on the line at any traditional Swedish summer house (a classic ‘clean girl’-esque image we’ve often seen on Djerf’s Instagram) it lingers throughout the styling process and beyond. That said, the texture and application takes me aback. Best described as a mix between saltwater spray and volume mist, it leaves the hair tacky (if not sticky) before it is worked in and activated with the hot air and round brush. As for the pump nozzle, it found it difficult to direct and apply the right amount of product to my hair – especially the root.

The tried & tested take away

Did the ‘Breezy Styling Mist’ give me a carbon copy of Matilda Djerf’s coveted blow-out? No. Did it give me far more volume and hold than usual? Absolutely.

Calling this product “the secret” to recreating Djerf’s exact ‘do would be misleading: for that, you’d need not only her feathered layers, but her exact hair type. But if you erase the expectation of a perfect recreation, the formula could and should become a staple in volumising routines across the globe. Lightweight and easy to work with (once you get a handle on the nozzle), it both boosts bounce and protects the hair against heat. More than that, it also serves as an adrenaline shock to lacklustre locks between washes.
