Wedding invites have a habit of being oddly specific or not specific enough. From black tie ceremonies to courthouse nuptials, beach affairs and garden parties, our editors took it upon themselves to decode those confusing wedding dress codes and round up the best wedding guest dresses for every type of celebration

Finding the right wedding guest dress is rarely as straightforward as it sounds. One invite says black tie. Another says garden party. A third offers nothing but a venue, a start time and the vague promise of dinner to follow. Suddenly, getting dressed becomes an exercise in decoding.

The best wedding guest dresses do some of that work for you. They make sense for the setting, the dress code and the level of formality, while still feeling like something you would actually want to wear. Below, we break down the most common wedding dress codes and the editor-approved wedding guest dresses for each, from black tie ceremonies to courthouse weddings and beyond.

What’s the difference between formal, semi-formal and black-tie optional?

Formal, semi-formal and black-tie optional tend to cause the most confusion because they often come tacked onto another dress code. In practice, the difference comes down to how polished the overall look should feel, how formal the setting is, and how much freedom you have with length, fabric and styling.

Black-tie optional is the dressiest of the three. While it does not demand the full regalia of a strict black-tie dress code, it should still feel unmistakably elevated. A floor-length gown is the safest route, but a refined midi in silk, satin, crepe or chiffon can also work, particularly if the styling is sharp.

Formal sits just below that. It still calls for occasionwear, but with a little more room to move. A gown works, but so does a sleek midi or ankle-grazing dress in a fabric with some substance. But remember: This is not the moment for anything too casual, flimsy or obviously beach-bound.

Semi-formal is the most relaxed of the three. It allows for shorter hemlines, lighter fabrics and a little more personality, provided the result still feels polished. A tailored mini, a floral midi or a clean slip dress can all make sense, depending on the venue and time of day.

If the wording leaves room for interpretation, it is usually wise to err slightly more dressed up. Weddings are many things, but a test case for how little effort you can get away with is not one of them. Leave the sweatpants at home.

What should you wear to a wedding with no dress code?

If a wedding invitation does not include a dress code, let the venue, time of day and tone of the event guide you. A city hall ceremony followed by dinner usually calls for something sleek and polished, while a garden or beach wedding allows for a softer, more relaxed approach.

When in doubt, a midi dress in a refined fabric is a safe bet. It looks considered without feeling overdone, and can easily be styled up or down depending on the setting. If the brief still feels unclear, ask. It is far better than getting it wrong.

Can you wear black to a wedding?

In much of the Nordics, black was historically considered a no-go for wedding guests, largely because of its association with mourning. Red, too, came with its own word of warning, particularly in Sweden and Denmark, where it was sometimes said to suggest a past involvement with the groom. Charming.

These days, the rules are looser. A black wedding guest dress will rarely raise eyebrows at a city hall ceremony, an evening reception or a black-tie wedding, and by some modern couples it is actually requested. That said, context still matters. A beach wedding, a daytime garden ceremony or a more traditional family wedding may call for something softer, lighter or less stark.

As for red, it remains more divisive. Some guests will not think twice, while others still see it as a colour best left at home. If the couple is traditional, or the guest list likely to include relatives with strong views on wedding etiquette, it may be worth proceeding with caution.

The best black-tie wedding guest dresses

Black tie is one of the more formal wedding dress codes, and your wedding guest dress should reflect that. While there is room for interpretation, the safest starting point is still a floor-length gown or an elegant, elongated silhouette in a dressy fabric. We'd suggest you look to silk, satin, chiffon, crepe or mikado, paired with clean lines and considered accessories.

A black tie wedding guest dress should feel polished rather than fussy, with enough structure or drape to hold its own in a more formal setting. That does not mean it has to feel predictable. A sharply cut column dress, sculptural neckline, open back or even precise tuxedo tailoring can all work beautifully here. Black tie tends to reward restraint, but a touch of drama goes a long way.

If in doubt, err on the side of dressing up. This is not the dress code for anything overly casual, overly abbreviated or obviously beach-bound. The best black tie wedding guest dresses strike the balance between occasion-worthy and assured, without looking as though they are trying too hard.

The best cocktail wedding guest dresses

Cocktail attire is where wedding guest dressing gets a little more flexible. A cocktail wedding guest dress will usually sit at the knee or below, with a midi length the safest bet. Shorter styles can work too, provided the fabric carries some weight: satin, crepe, taffeta or silk organza all help keep the look on the right side of dressed up. It still calls for a polished wedding guest dress, but there is far more room for personality than with black tie.

This dress code also rewards good styling. A simple dress can be lifted with a strong heel, a sculptural bag or a pair of earrings with some presence, while prints, texture and richer colour often feel more at home here than they would under a stricter dress code.

The best city hall wedding guest dresses

City hall weddings call for a different kind of dress altogether. The mood is sharper. Architectural, even. A little fashion-minded, but not in a try-hard way.

This is where slip dresses really earn their keep, along with sculpted midis, tailored minis and anything with a clean, deliberate line. Look for details with a bit of backbone: a strong shoulder, an asymmetric neckline, a hem with intent. There is room for romance, of course, but be wary of anything too sugary. Nothing frou-frou, nothing wistful. A city hall wedding guest dress should look right in daylight, good in photos and even better once the ceremony gives way to dinner.

The best garden wedding guest dresses

A garden wedding gives you a little more room to lean romantic, though restraint still helps. Florals work, obviously, but so do soft solids and silhouettes with a bit of movement: breezy midis, easy maxis, subtle draping. Just steer clear of anything too stiff.

Chiffon, silk and organza all come into their own here. They move well outdoors and feel right for the setting without tipping into full-blown pastoral fantasy. Keep the styling simple, and keep your shoes sensible: kitten heels or elegant flats will get you much farther on grass and gravel than anything that sinks on impact.

The best beach wedding guest dresses

There is a fine line between beach wedding and beach holiday, and the best dressers know the difference. For an occasion like this, you want your dress to address the realities of the setting. Slip dresses, airy maxis and softer silhouettes tend to work best, particularly in chiffon, silk or cotton voile. Washed-out shades and faded prints are superb, especially in a breezy a-line fit. Anything too engineered or structure usually looks faintly absurd beachside, and will leave you uncomfortably clammy by cocktail hour.

Keep the rest of it simple. Flat sandals, restrained jewellery. Definitely no ankle-breaking heel heights. A beach wedding guest dress should look good in motion and better once the sun starts to dip below the sea.
