Lazy girl longing for high shine hair? This new product was made just for you

By Josefin Forsberg

This autumn, we want our hair to rival a freshly polished mirror... but how do you achieve that level of shine at home? Our senior beauty editor Josefin Forsberg puts Maria Nila's latest launch luminous (aptly named The Gloss Coat) to the test, tapping celebrity hair stylist Adam Lukacs for expertly advice while she's at it

There’s a distinct change in the air. It might only be September, but a chill has already set in (if not physically, then at least mentally) across the Nordics and the collective mindset has already shifted. Out come the coats, the knits, the cosy cold-weather playlists. Routines are quietly reassessed. Just as we swap linen shirts in lieu structured layers, the carefree, tousled texture of summer waves starts to feel slightly off. This season, what we want is shine.

And not just a light-reflecting spritz or a healthy glow. We’re talking high-gloss, mirror-like hair. According to celebrity hairstylist and Maria Nila ambassador Adam Lukacs, “healthy hair is what we’re all after this autumn.” Smooth, glossy, expensive-looking strands are the mood de jour, but we don't always want to put the hours of effort in to achieve it. Which brings us to Gloss Coat, Maria Nila’s latest launch and, quite possibly, your shortcut to combining cashmere-soft hair with chrome-level shine.

How does Maria Nila's Gloss Coat work?

The Gloss Coat is a leave-in styling treatment that promises to deliver up to four days of glass-like shine. Applied to damp, towel-dried hair, it creates a lightweight veil that smooths frizz, provides anti-humidity protection, and guards against heat up to 230°C. While the immediate payoff is a reflective finish, the formula also includes caring ingredients that support the hair’s long-term health. In short, it is part glossing treatment, part protective shield, and part lazy-girl secret beauty weapon.

The first impression:

“You really can’t overdo it,” Lukacs assures me as he works the product through my hair, saturating it section by section. “As long as you steer clear of the roots, all you’ll end up with is glossier lengths.” To reveal the shine at its full potential, Lukacs recommends running a hot tool through the hair once it is dry. A straightener or curler intensifies the gloss, and with built-in heat protection up to 230°C, there is no need to panic about damage.

But even after just a quick rough dry, which thankfully does not require four hands or the stamina of a professional stylist, the results are visible. Surprising, considering Gloss treatments usually favour dark hair (blondes don't always have more fun). I was fully prepared for a muted result, but instead, my hair shone like spun gold despite the dreary morning.

Then came the rain. Normally, my wavy, frizz-prone tresses would have ballooned into chaos the second I stepped outside. This time, however, they remained remarkably smooth (the anti-humidity claim in not just clever copy) as the smooth shine survived a fifteen-minute walk back to the office – frizz kept firmly at bay.

The experience:

What surprised me most about the Gloss Coat was the staying power. As someone who usually wakes up with frazzled, frizzy, pillow-induced bedhead, I expected the gloss to be gone overnight. Instead, a simple brush-through in the morning was enough to coax the shine back to life.

Another revelation was how natural the hair felt. Some high-shine products can tip into stickiness or lacquered stiffness. Gloss Coat managed to deliver luminosity without weight, leaving my hair soft to the touch and it is reassuring to know the formula works beyond the surface, promoting long-term hair health rather than just faking it for the day. Honestly, this makes it ideal for anyone who wants hair that looks freshly styled with minimal effort. As a self-confessed lazy girl when it comes to hairstyling, I appreciate a product that works with my routine rather than against it.

The tried & tested take-away:

Maria Nila’s Gloss Coat lives up to its promises. It smooths, shines and holds up against the everyday obstacles of Nordic life, from drizzle to duvets. Will I use it every wash day? Probably not. But when I want my hair to have high-octane polish, it is the first product I will reach for.
