The Garment - AW24

By Josefin Forsberg

This season, The Garment served up a buffet of covetable '80s-inspired looks for any and all occasions – nuptials inclusive

This season marks the first collection following Danish content creator Sophie Roe's departure from the brand. But The Garment and its poised refinement seems unfazed, all-be-it evolving. There's something for most women (if not everyone) in the line-up of looks, sashaying and shapeshifting from grandpa-core office engagements to superbly chic evening affairs – and even down the aisle. Loose knits were layered over exaggerated pointed collars, tailoring kept straight and sleek, but – most notable of all – the ultimate leather jacket stepped onto the runway: cropped, with shoulder pads and statement pockets.

To create the assorted mix of looks, now lone creative director Charlotte Eskildsen scoured cult movies of the past, finally falling upon American Gigolo (1980) with Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton. "The inspiration mainly comes from the overall design choices throughout the movie, the set designs, the furniture seen through the different scenes staged in West Hollywood, the elegance of the intro with the Mercedes R 107," Eskildsen shares. Not to mention Richard Gere's opulent wardrobe and range of socks and ties (directly referenced in the collection) and Lauren Hutton's masculine layering, which directed many of the show's styling choices.

Showing at Molkes Palæ – housing the old trade association of Copenhagen – the venue in itself played into The Garment's core values. "Craftsmanship is a big part of our design and brand, so that this location was where all the old craftsmen met up, feels close to home for us," notes Eskildsen. A value which can be sensed in the accessories as the brand continues its collaboration with Florence-based leather expert Giaborghini presenting three new styles "We have a Derby shoe, which is golf inspired in the stitching and with a very heavy rubber sole," says Eskildsen, continuing: "We have a Mary Jane, which has a heel that mimics the stiletto heel, but you can walk in through the whole night and across cobble stone. And a knee length high heeled leather boot."
