Rosalía crowns this Nicklas Skovgaard hoodie as the cool girl piece of the moment

By Allyson Shiffman

In Rosalía’s “La Perla” music video, the pop star and tastemaker wears an instantly identifiable smocked hoodie by Danish designer Nicklas Skovgaard. We’re calling it now: this is the must-have cool girl piece of the season

Monday evening, when Rosalía’s “La Perla” music video hit the internet, Nicklas Skovgaard got a major surprise: nestled amongst the instantly iconic sporty looks was the Danish designer’s signature smocked hoodie. “I only found out last night when the music video came out,” says Skovgaard, who received the news via text from the person who handles his PR. “It was such happy Monday night news! Could a Monday get any better? I don’t think so.”

But it isn’t so surprising that one of our most major It girls would be wearing this particular hoodie. Designed as part of Skovgaard’s recently launched “Essentials” capsule, the hoodie is quickly emerging as a cool girl staple. It’s already been worn by Danish tastemaker Betty Krag and Swedish fashionista Alice Betts (full disclosure: I have the full set myself). The Rosalía endorsement may just push the hoodie into more mainstream must-have status.

At first glance, a grey, cotton, zip-up hoodie doesn’t feel like the most Skovgaard-esque item. The designer is, after all, known for bubble dresses, batwings and a sort of unapologetic glamour of a bygone era. The Camilla hoodie, however, features a smocked waist and sleeves to create a silhouette that skews distinctly 1980s. When paired with the matching straight-leg track pants, which also feature a smocked waistband, the look reads more early aughts – a distinctly of-the-moment expression. “My brand is very much about contrast – contrast within characters, fabrics, and silhouettes,” says Skovgaard. “I love taking something that I initially don’t see as a natural match for the brand or its aesthetics, and then reshaping it into something that feels right and still carries the DNA of my designs. To me, the tracksuit is giving cosy comfy chic.”

Rosalía, meanwhile, paired her Skovgaard hoodie with high-cut metal panties (it’s giving super hip chastity belt), low slung sweatpants and “don’t mess with me” shades.

As for how it felt to see Rosalía wearing the look? “Amazing!” says Skovgaard. “Thank you Darlin’ Rosalía and the entire styling team behind it all.”
