Swedish actor Fares Fares walked the Cannes red carpet for his competition film Eagles of the Republic looking every bit the leading man. Here, he breaks down the dapper look

On Monday evening, a gaggle of Swedes descended on the Cannes red carpet. It was the premiere of Eagles of the Republic, a competition film directed by Tarik Saleh and starring Fares Fares and a slew of prominent Swedish actors came out to show their support. Though Alexander Skarsgård turned heads in his sequinned suit pants, it was Fares’ night and he looked every bit the leading man in a striking Zegna suit. “It was such an amazing feeling to walk that red carpet,” says Fares. “I’ve done many red carpets before, but this was crazy.”

When it came time for Fares to pick the look for the premiere, it all came down to two tuxedo jackets. “I tried two different colours and I went with the white one,” says Fares, who worked with stylist Sarah Bideman. “It was a beautiful fabric and the fit was amazing.” The jacket featured a subtle tonal leaf pattern; just daring enough to turn heads whilst remaining distinctly classic. He complemented the suit – complete with a Zegna bowtie and shoes – with chunky Loewe aviators, finishing the look with understated Louis Abel jewellery and a Cartier watch. “I love jewellery,” he notes.

For hair and makeup, Fares visited the Dior suite at Le Majestic hotel. “I had a glass of champagne when I went up to the Dior suite,” he notes. And with that, he was in the mood to hit the red carpet.

There were no nerves when Fares stood in front of the throngs of photographers (he estimates that when he left the theatre were "about three thousand" of them). “I wasn’t nervous at all until I sat down just before the screening started,” he says. “You go into a zen state of mind and just glide through it. It’s surreal here in Cannes.” It helped that he had his ultimate supporter on his arm, his wife Clara Hallencreutz Fares who looked dazzling in a pale yellow Rotate gown, complemented with Ole Lynggaard jewellery (a full Danish look). “I can’t do anything if she isn’t sitting there next to me,” says Fares.

After the premiere, in true Cannes fashion, Fares and his Swedish crew boarded a yacht chartered by the production company Arte to celebrate. “And after that we went to dinner – the whole friend crew – and then it was a great beach party to celebrate the film,” says Fares, noting that he’s “really proud” of the film (in a meta moment, the actor stars as a famous Egyptian actor who finds himself in hot water with the authorities). “It was a few drinks – I can say that,” says Fares of the evening. And he was certainly feeling the after effects of the champagne at his 9AM photo call the following day. But of course, it was worth it. “Every actor and director dreams of coming to Cannes,” he says. “It’s the ultimate thing.”
