Alexander Skarsgård has chosen not to fly under the fashion radar this season, appearing at the Cannes Film Festival in increasingly daring outfits. With sky-high boots and trousers that gleamed brightly, the star was impossible to miss

Breaking news last week revealed that the Cannes Film Festival, famously a smörgåsbord of risqué, radical, and romantic red carpet moments, was introducing a strict new dress code. The introduction of a ban on nudity and excessively voluminous ensembles may have scuppered the plans of many, but it didn’t stop Alexander Skarsgård from delivering a strangely sensual display.

The Swedish star has made multiple appearances at the festival to promote his new film Pillion, in which he plays the leader of a queer motorbike gang engaged in a sub/dom relationship. Reflecting the movie’s BDSM undertones, Skarsgård opted for deliciously tight leather trousers tucked into chunky biker boots for Sunday’s premiere. He completed the look with a cheeky vintage white T-shirt emblazoned with a Tom of Finland boot-licking artwork, in a not-so-subtle nod to Pillion’s provocative tone.

Later in the day, Skarsgård upped the ante – and the height of his boots – as he attended the premiere of The Phoenician Scheme. Following the lead of many other stars on the red carpet, he donned a crisp tuxedo courtesy of Saint Laurent. But breaking away from convention, Skarsgård tucked his trousers into a pair of striking black leather thigh-high boots.

Just when you thought Skarsgård was done causing red-carpet chaos, he turned up at the premiere of Eagles of the Republic in a look that was anything but ordinary. While his grey pinstriped blazer played it cool, he cranked up the camp with a pastel pink, dramatically oversized bowtie. And as if that weren’t enough, he fully embraced the more-is-more mantra, rounding out the ensemble with a pair of outrageously bright, sequinned blue trousers.
