The Cannes red carpet has long served as a showcase for unforgettable fashion moments, but Elsa Hosk’s archival Mugler look at this year's Cannes Film Festival is one for the books.

The ensemble, sourced directly from the Mugler archives, hails from the house’s iconic Fall-Winter 1995/1996 'Cirque d’Hiver' collection by Manfred Thierry Mugler – a landmark show that celebrated the designer's 20th anniversary at the time. The look, a black optical striped dress paired with a reversible velvet coat, was originally worn by Claudia Schiffer on the runway, making Hosk’s turn in the gown a moment steeped in fashion legacy.

It wasn’t a mere re-wear, either – careful preservation, fittings, and expert tailoring went into ensuring the piece maintained its original integrity while fitting Hosk to perfection. The styling was exactingly accurate to the original, making the appearance a studied tribute.

A mirror image of Schiffer, Hosk wore her hair in a dramatic, voluminous updo – a sculptural beehive that nodded to retro glamour while staying utterly Mugler. Tucked into the sweeping blonde bouffant was a single silk flower in soft sunset hues, almost identical to the bloom that adorned Schiffer’s crown 30 years earlier. The detail didn’t go unnoticed by fashion fans: the flower, placed just so, brought the full Mugler fantasy to life.

Even the beauty look was in keeping with the archive. Elsa recreated Schiffer's pearlescent glow, defined lashes and a softly lined lip – all subtle echoes of the ‘90s styling that made the original look so unforgettable. It wasn’t just a dress revival, but a full embodiment of a fashion era, reimagined for 2025.
