Vogue Scandinavia's ‘In the Closet’ series takes you where you've always wanted to go: deep inside the wardrobes of our region's most exciting – and stylish – personalities. In this special episode, we head backstage at the Stockholm stop of Zara Larsson’s Midnight Sun tour where the pop star gives us an inside look at her iconic wardrobe
It’s mere hours before Zara Larsson takes the stage for her sold-out hometown show at Avicii Arena, but the pop star is miraculously unbothered. Clad in fuzzy slippers and a breezy floral dress better suited to a beach vacation than late November in Stockholm, Larsson is positively chill when we meet her in the wardrobe room in the bowels of the stadium. Racks upon racks of teeny tiny glittery, sequin-heavy mini skirts hang next to airbrushed baby Ts. Here, the indelible looks for Larsson’s sun-drenched Midnight Sun tour come together.
Described as “Cyber Y2K Scandinavian Barbie”, the Midnight Sun aesthetic is unapologetically maximalist; a burst of warm light in the dark Swedish winter. The look is completed with nostalgic, rhinestone-happy makeup by artist Sophie Sinot. “At first I felt, ‘Oh how silly, this is such a summer album’,” says Larsson. “But the whole theme is that summer never ends. And being in Stockholm now and Europe in general, travelling with this tour, I feel like it’s really nice to come in and see the stage and see all the colours and the glitter, because outside is just dark.” Hours before showtime, throngs of Larsson fans could be found huddled together outside the arena, wearing sequinned skirts and glittery makeup, flowers tucked behind their ears.
Though this marks the end of the European leg of the tour, the madness is far from over. The US dates pick up tomorrow in Fort Worth, Texas and carry well into next year, after which, she’ll take on festival season (she’s already been announced for Way Out West). Also in the mix: the recently released Amazon documentary Zara Larsson: Up Close (which chronicles Larsson preparing for this tour) and her intimates line Main Rose.
In this exclusive video, Larsson walks us through the looks, breaks down the art the quick change and reveals what those hot pink crocs are for.
