Sleep is the ultimate wellness goal for two reasons: it improves energy levels and is a key time for skincare to work its magic. Overnight is when our body, and crucially our skin, goes into repair mode. Specifically, between the hours of 11pm and 4am our cell production almost doubles. At the same time beneficial hormones get to work: the sleep hormone melatonin helps to counteract damage from UV and pollution while HGH (the human growth hormone) accelerates skin repair. “During the day, skin is busy protecting against pollution and UV rays so at night is when it can focus on regeneration,” says cosmetic doctor and skincare expert Dr. Ifeoma Ejikeme.
