Recent newcomer to the Copenhagen Fashion Week schedule, Taus is here to make a romantically bold statement. Whilst on the surface, the brand offers ethereally whimsical garments, below the surface, rebellion is taking hold
"It's very difficult to keep the line between the past and the present." For those familiar with the delightfully eccentric charm of Grey Gardens, this quote – spoken with disarming honesty by Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale – is instantly recognisable and affectionally treasured. For Copenhagen-based label Taus, however, it serves as more than a memorable line; it is the evocative title of its latest collection.
In a quiet corner of Østerbro, Copenhagen, Taus invited guests into the enchanting and enticing yard and winter garden of Villa Kultur, a historic villa steeped in old-world charm. A setting steeped with atmospheric beauty and symbolic resonance, it is a space where the past lingers and the present is reimagined. Here, Taus sought to open a thoughtful dialogue around the often-forgotten lives of misunderstood women in history.
The collection draws emotional and aesthetic inspiration from figures such as the ever-enigmatic Little Edie and the fiercely unapologetic Sinéad O'Connor - women who were marginalised or ridiculed for daring to live and speak their truth. By channelling their legacy, Taus weaves a narrative that challenges the binary between reverence and rebellion, elegance and eccentricity, history and now. Through fabric, silhouette, and story, the label pays tribute to those who defied convention - not as a nostalgic glance backwards but as a powerful reminder that the most radical thing a woman can do is to be entirely herself.
Sustainability has always been a pillar of Taus' philosophy – but in this collection, it transcends practicality and intention, becoming a poetic exploration of memory, transformation, and time itself. Rather than simply reusing old materials, Taus breathes new life into them, embedding every piece with layers of untold stories.
Flapper-style dresses are artfully constructed from antique scarves, their faded prints whispering fragments of past lives. Wedding ensembles emerge from delicately crocheted vintage doilies, once emblems of domestic pride, now reimagined as declarations of individuality. Halter-neck tops, crafted from vintage waistcoats turned inside out, reveal linings and seams once hidden - suggesting what is kept secret can be the most beautiful of all.
This process becomes a metaphor for the mutable nature of memory – how it fades, distorts, and resurfaces in unexpected manners. Taus leans into this theme by hand-dyeing garments with coffee, tea, and beetroot, producing hues that evoke natural ageing and imperfection. Each stain and variation is intentional, a quiet rebellion against uniformity and convention.
For Taus, repurposing is not simply an act of sustainability; it is a ritualistic manner of honouring. Each garment carries echoes of its previous existence, and in wearing it, one continues its journey. We may never fully uncover where these materials came from, nor predict where they will journey next, but what we hold is in the present moment: storied, imperfect, alive.
