What happens when you combine Fight Club and Taxi Driver with a dash of guerrilla filmmaking? Space Idol’s video for his latest single, 'The Lobby'. The Danish artist, whose real name is Anton Thiemke, describes the result as “raw, schizophrenic chaos that feels intense but also deeply personal”. Chaos is right – the second half of the video, which finds Space Idol on a bender at beloved Copenhagen nightclub Søpavillonen, was entirely improvised. “It led to some really wild and unexpected stuff happening,” says Thiemke.
The cinematic first half of the video finds Thiemke and his real-life girlfriend, model Nina Marker, playing two sides of the same character (much like Edward Norton and Brad Pitt in Fight Club). “Working with Nina is always a blast. She’s so talented, and any chance I get to collaborate with her, I jump on it,” says Thiemke, noting that it was quite “hilarious” to be “beat up” by Marker on screen. For Thiemke and Marker, playing one character came naturally. “We’re so in sync, both creatively and personally, that it made everything easier,” he says. “Plus, we always joke that we have the same hair, so that was a bonus.”
For the improvised scenes, Thiemke and directors (and brothers) Mikkel and Mark Stenild head out looking for “cool, crazy people to bring into the mix”. Things almost took a turn for the worst, however, when club-goers mistook Space Idol’s rowdy behaviour for reality. “Random people thought it was actually happening, like a real-life situation,” says Thiemke. “We had to calm them down and let them know, ‘Hey, we’re all friends here!’”
