Queen Margrethe II is the first queen to rule Denmark in over 500 years. Now, she has been doing so for 50 years. Here we look back at some of her most stylish moments
In 2020, Queen Margrethe of Denmark celebrated her 80th birthday, today the milestones continue with the Danish royal celebrating 50 years on the throne. At age 31, in 1972, she ascended the throne after the death of her father Frederik IX. She became the first female monarch of Denmark since Margrethe I, ruler of the Scandinavian kingdoms in 1375–1412. At the time popular opinion in the royals was waning, now, however, a 2018 Voxmeter poll found that over three quarters of Danes supported the monarchy.
A some-what unconventional royal - she is a self taught artist work and has taken on the role of set designer for Netflix’s latest project Ehrengard by Bille August - she has become a style icon through her love of colour, accessories and devil-may-care attitude. Queen Margrethe’s wardrobe is a lesson in dressing without fear, embracing the eccentric and giving space to gestures of grandeur.
Here, we take a walk down memory lane of some of her best sartorial hits through the years.
