Swedish rug brand Layered has just unveiled new, eye-catching iterations of its popular 'Röllakan' range, which takes its cues from traditional Scandinavian female craftsmanship

Last September, Swedish rug brand Layered introduced a special collection, dubbed ‘Röllakan’, paying homage to traditional Scandinavian female craftsmanship. The line-up – featuring five eye-catching, geometric-patterned 100 per cent wool rugs along with two runners in a similar spirit, all handwoven – marked a shift from the brand’s usual subdued colour palette, incorporating vivid hues and motifs plucked from Swedish nature and folk art.

“We wanted to step away from pastels and felt a longing for more rich, intense colours. That’s what led us to Röllakan in the first place,” said Malin Glemme, creative director and CEO of Layered.

Now, heralding the arrival of spring, Layered is expanding its ‘Röllakan’ offering with three new iterations. Building on the collection’s original vision, the latest additions reimagine the best-selling 'Hilma' in a muted, multi-shade colourway of greens and deep reds and introduce a fresh pattern: ‘Ruth’. This new design leans into a more minimalistic mood with its structured, checkered pattern and comes in two dreamy hues: ‘Spring Grass’ – an artful blend of delicate dusty pinks and greens – and ‘Summer Sky’, a lush composition of blues reminiscent of a clear, sunny day.

With the new editions, Glemme notes that the brand “wanted to create lighter and more spring-inspired colours that bring energy and warmth to a space.” “The combination of classic craftsmanship and a modern colour palette gives the collection a fresh and updated feel,” she continues.

Traditional röllakan rugs date back centuries. Originally handwoven at home by women – particularly those living on farms in rural Sweden – these rugs are rooted in age-old craftsmanship, local folklore, and nature. They were made to be passed down through generations, much like Layered’s rugs are today. “Layered has always aimed to highlight female craftsmanship and artistry,” says Glemme. “This collection is an expression of that ambition while connecting to colours and patterns with strong cultural and aesthetic significance.”
