With its organic floral pattern and bright coloring, Kasthall's new Anemon rug collection embodies the spirit of spring and a new creative era as the Swedish brand celebrates its 135th anniversary
It's golden hour in Milan's Brera district, with Design Week folk spilling out on to the sun-drenched streets, revelling in the latest creations on show. Outside Kasthall's showroom on Piazza Paola, the weary feet of the design savants are treated to a vibrant, tufted surface underfoot: the Swedish brand's new Anemon rug.
Created by Kasthall Design Studio, Anemon celebrates the very gradual arrival of spring in Sweden, 'arriving slowly, awakening like a frozen memory'. The largescale floral pattern is inspired by an original 1991 aquarelle painting by Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg – Kasthall's former design director and the visionary behind many of its icons.

Inside the showroom exhibition, Ullberg's artwork hangs behind a gauzy sheer curtain – evoking the way in which it lay dormant in the brand's extensive archives like a flower beneath winter snow. Now, in the hands of Kasthall Design Studio, it's been given the chance to bloom once more, feeling both familiar and new, just like the feeling of spring in Sweden.

Walking through the brand's showroom – transformed into a living gallery by British interior designer Richard J McConkey for Milan Design Week with the exhibition The Springtime of Kasthall & Astrid, the Anemon rug is on display in three distinct colour variations: blue, coral, and lilac. While the blue version is a faithful representation of Ullberg’s original vision, the coral and lilac renditions reflect contemporary updates by Kasthall’s in-house design team, offering a fresh take on the motif.

According to Kasthall's CEO Mirkku Kullberg, the launch of the Anemon collection signals a new chapter in the company’s evolution. “We are entering a new and exciting era at Kasthall – one where colours and superior artistry can flourish,” says Kullberg. “Anemon is a great example of how carpets are making a comeback as statement pieces in the home. We believe we are entering a golden age for rugs and textiles, where they become an essential part of creating welcoming spaces that reflect the lives and stories of the people who inhabit them.”

The hand-tufted Anemon carpets are produced at Kasthall’s factory in Kinna, Sweden, where craftsmanship and quality remain at the heart of every design. Made from pure wool mixed with linen, each carpet boasts a unique melange effect and sophisticated bouclé contours, elevating the tactile experience.
By reimagining Ullberg’s original design, Anemon pays tribute to the enduring influence of one of Sweden’s most iconic textile designers. Her legacy continues to resonate, not just within the walls of Kasthall, but also in the world of design at large, where her spirit lives on through each new creation.
