Can you wear socks with loafers? In 2026 it isn't about whether you could, but that you should. Just like wine and cheese are the dreamiest dinner duo, loafers are best served with a sock. Below, we've narrowed it down to three of the best ways to master this perfect pairing for the season ahead

With March around the corner, loafers are back in heavy rotation. We’re seeing them everywhere: On the runways, on the street, and nestled under our desks at work (Sadly Stockholm is still to slush-filled for a proper outing). But how do we wear them in 2026?

With socks, of course.

Socks with loafers are no longer a workaround for stiff leather or unpredictable weather. The right pair can sharpen tailoring, soften a dress, or add texture to an otherwise minimal outfit. A ribbed sock grounds wide-leg trousers. A sheer sock adds tension to polished black loafers. A knee-high shifts proportion entirely.

The question isn’t whether you wear socks with loafers. It’s which socks you choose.

How to style loafers with socks

The right sock-and-loafer formula comes down to measuring proportion, colour and weight. Heavier loafers can support thicker ribbed or wool socks without feeling bulky. Slim penny loafers benefit from something more refined, like a sheer or knee-high option. Black loafers look graphic with crisp white or tonal grey socks. Brown loafers feel richer when paired with cream, oatmeal or textured knits.

Balance is everything. When the shoe is structured, the sock can either reinforce that sharpness or deliberately soften it.

Below, three combinations that consistently work in our own wardrobes.

1

Knee-high socks with penny loafers

Knee-high socks are no longer a purely practical styling choice. When properly considered, they can replace tights and create a lighter silhouette under dresses and skirts. This works particularly well with classic leather penny loafers in black, oxblood or chocolate brown. The exposed knee keeps things modern, while the classic loafer shade and sock adds some preppy polish. But, make sure to keep the palette tight. We suggest cream coloured socks with brown loafers and grey with black loafers.

Sheer socks with modern loafers

If your outfit feels flat, a sheer sock is the quickest upgrade. Transparent, lace or fine fishnet socks introduce texture without adding unnecessary bulk, meaning they pair particularly well with the supple, soft modern leader look. Alternatively, there's the appeal of creating some sartorial tension pairing delicate socks with more structured leather loafers.

Ribbed socks with classic loafers

A ribbed sock is the most reliable option. It works with everything from traditional penny loafers to platform or chunky lug-sole styles. For a streamlined look, match the sock to your trousers or to the loafer itself. For contrast, try white ribbed socks with black loafers or charcoal against brown leather.

If you’re choosing a thicker cotton or merino style, consider sizing up slightly in your loafers. Comfort should not be sacrificed for style.
