In touching tribute – a love story of sorts – Swedish hairdresser and headpiece creator, Matthias Lavesson pays homage to his grandmother in the most fabulous and fitting way: a photoshoot captured by Niklas Palmklint. Dressed in vintage Jean Paul Gaultier, this shoot proves beauty and love never age...

Matthias Lavesson has had plenty of ‘pinch me’ moments in his career. Creating statement headpieces for Lady Gaga and HRH Princess Sofia (among others) may be a world away from his childhood in Osby, a small village in the north of Skåne, Sweden, but to find out who we are today, we must go back to the start.

“Growing up, being different, being gay in a small village can be a very difficult and challenging situation,” says the founder of Headpieces by M. “I faced a lot of bullying in school which sometimes was very hard to handle and accept. I didn’t tell my parents about it, so there were long periods that were very hard to get through. A lot of that was because I was different, I dressed differently. Today, when I think back, I’m very humble because I made it through the difficult years, and here I am.”
