Gustaf Westman puts the camp in camping with his chunky pink Mercedes-Benz

Swedish designer Gustaf Westman brought his signature chunky aesthetic to the new Mercedes-Benz CLA and capsule collection of camping items

Over the weekend, a candy pink, bulbous automobile dominated Instagram. Topped with a matching pink tent, a foldout picnic table and flanked with exaggerated wing mirrors, the car is unmistakably the work of Gustaf Westman, who brought his signature chunky aesthetic to the all-new Mercedes-Benz CLA. The delightful piece was revealed in London last week alongside a handful of new chunky objects to complete an aesthetically pleasing picnic setup.

“Sadly, it’s not driveable. I wish!” says Westman of the car. “It is a conceptual art piece. So it's more about investigating different functions a car could have. The theme is hiking with friends and whatever you would need to be out in nature.” Though Westman is admittedly not a “car guy”, the project was too delicious to resist. “I have the self-confidence to believe I can design anything, and the creative freedom of this project made it impossible to say no,” says Westman, adding that he, of course, “loves Mercedes-Benz”. “Also, the opportunity to create a small collection of Mercedes-Benz objects was so fun!” The artist is the second of five global ambassadors invited to bring their singular vision to the CLA.

Meanwhile, Westman’s idea of what one needs to brave the wilderness is comprised of two new chunky plates – one designed specifically to hold a row of hotdogs – a chunky picnic blanket and the aforementioned wing mirror, which would double as a handy makeup station. “I’m weak for a very classic, timeless hotdog with mustard, ketchup and crispy fried onions,” says Westman. While the physical popup has since closed, the objects are still available for purchase online.

Westman may not be particularly into cars, but he does have some experience camping. “One time when we went camping in Torekov it rained so hard that our tent started floating away,” say Westman. “That’s why you should never put your tent on the ground! Always on the roof of the car."
