Feeling fiery? March’s planetary drama could have you seeing red

Exclusively for Vogue Scandinavia's Society members, astrologer Clarisse Monahan of Venus in Retrograde charts each month's most powerful cosmic shifts, breaking down exactly how to understand, navigate and benefit from them

Back in the 1970s, a phenomenon known as counter-programming emerged in America. Rejecting the logic – “if you can’t beat them, join them” – studio execs began instead to air television shows whose themes ran counter to massive viewing events like the Super Bowl. So, while one major network might broadcast the Academy Awards (which not only promised to dominate the ratings war that evening but also skewed female), rivals might counter-program with hyper-masculinist fare like Rambo: First Blood.

The new principle became: when you can’t win the dominant demographic, win the underserved one. Or: when they zig big, you zag.

Right now, everyone is zigging to the Total Lunar eclipse in fussy Virgo on March 3rd. It’s a ratings monster, so to speak. Indeed, everywhere you look, astrologers are hyping this somewhat rare lunation, during which the Moon will pass into the Earth’s shadow and turn a moody and ominous red. The Blood Moon, it’s called. Very Hollywood.

While the eclipse itself will only last 58 minutes, or about the same length as an episode of Better Call Saul, the symbolic or astrological impact of the Blood Moon will be felt longer, nudging us toward discernment and clarity around Virgo themes, such as making healthy choices, establishing better daily routines, and… yawn. Despite the hype, this particular program seems admittedly milquetoast.
