Forever It-girl Chloë Sevigny reveals her holiday dressing hacks

By Clare McInerney

The iconic Chloë Sevigny – now unveiled as the face of Zalando's covetable new holiday campaign 'Unwrap Your Story' – shares her 'go-to's for festive season dressing, and we're taking notes

Earlier this year, a queue of well-dressed women snaked endlessly throughout the blocks of New York's NoHo neighbourhood. Their hope? To simply get a foot in the door of the closet sale being held by the one and only Chloë Sevigny. Since she rose to fame in the late '90s, the actor has effortlessly maintained an It-girl side hustle – 'effortless' also being the buzzword of her eclectic, Tumblr-famous, 'je ne sais quoi' style. Decades on and nothing has changed – with everything Sevigny touches turning to sartorial cool-girl gold, including the covetable new holiday campaign from Zalando which she fronts.

Titled 'Unwrap Your Story', the campaign explored the relationship between style and identity, intimately following Sevigny through intimate settings and chapters of her own life. "Every piece of clothing represents a a different story and a glimpse into our different lives," Sevigny says. "'Unwrap Your Story’ is an invitation to celebrate our multifaceted identities, and a journey I’m proud to be part of."

Brought to life by Justyna Obasi and Dani Pujalte, Zalando's campaign was a creative process that Sevigny describes as "totally immersive and collaborative," and she leaned into the personal nature of the concept as well. "The holidays are such a sentimental time, a time to reflect and give thanks, to appreciate the people around us that we love and hold dear, and I hope the campaign reflects some of those sentiments."

Colour, fabrics, prints, designers, street wear, all are very important to me but having a natural sense of style is something I’m afraid you are just born with. Cultivating that and taking the time to present yourself a certain way is the effort.

While the Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actor is successfully developing her directing chops with a new film set to be released in 2024, Sevigny still holds fashion close to her heart. “Fashion has always been one of my favourite ways to express or articulate my interests and views," she remarks. "I’ve tried to remain true to myself and my likes regardless of other people’s comments whether they be praises or criticisms. Colour, fabrics, prints, designers, street wear, all are very important to me but having a natural sense of style is something I’m afraid you are just born with. Cultivating that and taking the time to present yourself a certain way is the effort.”

Zalando's 'Unwrap Your Story' showcases Sevigny's multifaceted personality and shape-shifting nature through the eyes of her loved ones – prompting us to wonder if there is a side of the It-girl the public is yet to see. “I like to think of myself as a very grounded individual," she responds. "It’s fun to play dress up and be glamorous but taking my composting to our local drop off, managing chores around the house and caring for my child are more satisfying at this point in my life, more fulfilling than lots of other aspects of my career. I have been working professionally for almost 30 years now, so private time with friends and family I hold very dear.”

In keeping with Zalando's nurturing of distinctly personal style, the campaign sees Sevigny festively donning sparkling sequinned frocks, vibrant knitwear, vintage-tinged plaids and head-turning outerwear. Sevigny's own take on holiday dressing? "My go-to party outfits are generally reflective of the classic holiday looks," she says. "Little black dress. Velvet. Bows. Stockings. A black turtleneck paried with almost anything and red lips is a constant."
