48 hours at Stockholm’s Bank Hotel – the ultimate weekend escape

Set inside a former financial headquarters just moments from Nybroviken, Stockholm’s Bank Hotel combines early-20th-century grandeur with a hideaway feeling, making it one of the capital’s most compelling addresses for a perfectly paced city weekend

There are city hotels you book to pass through, and then there are city hotels you want to settle into. Tucked just behind Stockholm’s Nybroviken waterfront, Bank Hotel belongs firmly to the latter category. Set inside a former bank headquarters, the property has an unmistakable grandeur: soaring ceilings, carved stone details and a feeling of being built to last.

Yet despite its central city address – minutes from the boutiques of Bibliotekstan and the leafy promenade of Strandvägen – the hotel feels like a self-contained sanctuary that you probably won't want to leave. Below, this is how Vogue Scandinavia would spend 48 hours at Bank Hotel.

The rooms: designed for lingering

If there is ever a moment to upgrade your stay, it’s here. The Penthouse Executive Terrace Suite, stretching across two architectural rooms and opening onto a terrace that runs the entire length of the space, turns a weekend visit into something closer to a private residence in the city centre.

Inside, the atmosphere balances Nordic restraint with grandeur with a generous lounge, an elegant dining area and a separate bedroom anchored by a king-size bed dressed in crisp linens – not to mention a walk-in wardrobe.

But it’s the terrace that defines the experience. With rooftops unfolding across one of Europe’s most quietly beautiful capitals, it becomes the natural setting for morning coffee, sunset drinks or simply doing nothing at all (arguably the true marker of a successful weekend escape).

Breakfast at Bonnie’s sets the pace

Morning begins in Bonnie’s, the hotel’s main restaurant set beneath the original glass ceiling of the historic Bank Hall. The room alone is worth the visit: light pours in from above, catching marble surfaces and polished architectural details that quietly remind you of the building’s former life.

Breakfast here is generous and no one's in a hurry. Coffee arrives strong, pastries are fresh from selected local producers and the buffet moves easily between Scandinavian staples and continental favourites. It’s the kind of setting that encourages a second cup, and perhaps a slower start than originally planned.

Step outside – or don’t

Part of Bank Hotel’s appeal lies in its proximity to everything. A short walk leads to Stockholm's finest fashion flagships of Bibliotekstan, the galleries around Nybroplan and ferries departing towards Djurgården’s museums and parkland.

But there’s an equally compelling argument for staying put. Return mid-afternoon and the hotel resumes its role as a calm base in the centre of the city. A moment on the terrace, a pause in the lounge or simply a rejuvenating hour upstairs can reset the pace of the weekend entirely.

Aperitivo hour at Papillon

As evening approaches, Papillon becomes the natural first stop. Inspired by the former bank director’s private office, the bar leans into its heritage with wall-to-wall carpeting, mahogany panelling and softly lit corners that feel both intimate and international.

The drinks list balances classics with more exploratory options, making it just as suitable for a quick pre-dinner cocktail as it is for settling in properly. A small plate or two alongside a carefully mixed aperitif marks the transition from day to night without needing to leave the building.

Dinner in the Bank Hall

Returning to Bonnie’s in the evening reveals an entirely different atmosphere. Where breakfast feels bright and unhurried, dinner brings a more composed rhythm to the space.

The menu draws on coastal European influences with a subtle French leaning: comforting dishes, local ingredients and signature touches that feel distinctive without being overly formal. It’s the sort of restaurant that works equally well for a celebratory evening or a spontaneous last-minute reservation.

Rooftop views at Le Hibou

No stay at Bank Hotel is complete without a visit upstairs.

Perched at the top of the building, Le Hibou feels like stepping into a Parisian apartment transported above Stockholm’s rooftops. The terrace opens out across the city skyline – church spires, waterlines and warm evening light stretching in every direction.

Order a cocktail, settle into a corner and let the city shift gradually into night.
