The Swedish actor charmed in a dapper Thom Browne suit inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s penchant for tailoring

Amongst the Scandi stars that turned up in their finest garb for the star-studded 2023 Met Gala was one of our firm favourites: Succession actor Alexander Skarsgård. First spotted on the red carpet at the biggest night in fashion back in 2013, he’s been a consistent guest over the years and now, a decade later, appeared looking as dapper as ever.

This year’s dress code for the Met Gala honoured the late, much-celebrated designer Karl Lagerfeld who helmed a host of major Maisons, including Chanel, Chloé, Fendi, along with his namesake brand. With decades worth of fashion collections to inspire, attendees pulled out all the stops and paid tribute to the revered designer with archival vintage pieces, reimagined numbers based on iconic Lagerfeld creations, and even dressing up as Choupette, his beloved Birman cat.

Skarsgård opted for a head-to-toe custom Thom Browne look with a jet black sharply tailored tuxedo, paired with a crisp white shirt, matching cashmere knitted vest and chunky boots, perfect for stomping down the red carpet. Lagerfeld, of course, was also a lover of the classic white shirt for occasions both big and small, once saying: “If you ask me what I’d most like to have invented in fashion, I’d say the white shirt. For me, the white shirt is the basis of everything. Everything else comes after.”

Browne – who dressed 12 Met Gala guests, including Jenna Ortega, Olivia Rodrigo and Trevor Noah for this year’s soirée – explained to The Hollywood Reporter that all of his designs for the event stayed true to his design language, “married together in tailoring… deconstructed and reconstructed.” Browne also noted that each piece honours the legendary designer Lagerfeld, “a pioneer of design across two centuries”.
