Acne Studios - SS23

By Clare McInerney

Celebrating Acne Studios' tenth year of showing in Paris, the spring/summer 2023 collection was a twisted wedding party

The Palais de Tokyo was swathed in saccharine pink with guests perched on wedding-night bed sheets, surrounded by handmade shell candelabras. After a decade of Parisian shows, creative director Jonny Johansson wanted to mark the occasion in the most iconic way possible: a wedding. "I find weddings fascinating because they are always a melting pot, and they kickstart a lot of aesthetic choices,” Johansson said.

The show, which was soundtracked by an ethereal live performance by Eartheater & Leya, unveiled a line-up of romantic lace, georgette, and satin crepe, punctuated with gleaming spikes and mixed with studded hand-painted leather. Each look was a study in subversion and contrast, with all the usual wedding tropes dissected and deconstructed.

“There’s something cute, kitschy, sweet about weddings – but also something serious, tense, and vulnerable," Johansson noted. "I wanted to put a spin on the classic, kitschy wedding, referencing everything from the tablecloth to the chandelier, the wedding-night bedsheets, the bride’s shoe, the bows, and the cute flowers."
